Mental health by the numbers

* 555: the average number of California state hospital beds per 100,000 residents in the 1950s.

* 14: the average number of California state hospital beds per 100,000 residents today.

* 4:  times more likely that a person with severe mental illness is in jail or prison, as opposed to a hospital.

* 19: the percentage of state prison inmates with mental illnesses in 2007.

* 25: the percentage of state prison inmates with mental illnesses in 2012.

* 25: the number of California’s 58 counties that have no psychiatric beds.

* More than half: the number of Californians with identified mental health needs who received no treatment in the preceding year. For uninsured adults, the rate was closer to two-thirds.
