Today, as we begin our second year of operation at the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, one more thing can be said:  This new journalism model has legs.

Multimedia reporter Lauren M. Whaley's story on wood smoke pollution from fireplaces aired on KPCC's The Madeleine Brand Show on Monday. The South Coast Air Quality Management District rolled out a voluntary no-burn program this season for the Southland, asking fireplace owners not to light wood fires on days when air pollution is already high. Dare we say, the issue is heated. Listen here.

The California HealthCare Foundation Center for Health Reporting, in partnership with the Chico Enterprise-Record, has won a top journalism award for "A Burning Issue," an in-depth project exploring the politics, science and health consequences of wood stove smoke pollution .

Kelley Weiss, an award-winning broadcast journalist, has joined the staff of the California HealthCare Foundation Center for Health Reporting. The Center, based at the University of Southern California, reports on California health care issues through partnerships with news organizations across the state. Weiss will help lead an expansion of the center’s broadcast work, especially in public radio.
