Access nightmare
Finding specialists tough for rural patients under managed care

About this project

The search for specialists who provide care in Medi-Cal's managed care system has become a "nightmare" for rural residents, say local providers. As the number of enrollees in the state’s newly expanded system has soared under the Affordable Care Act, the availability of specialists willing to treat them has not kept pace. This is proving especially problematic in rural counties where beneficiaries were moved into HMO-like managed care plans last year.
